What is a Brain Tumor?

A brain tumor is a collection of cells that have grown in a non ordered way. Tumors that start in the brain are called primary brain tumors. This is different to cancers that have spread to the brain from somewhere else in the body. These are called secondary brain tumors or brain metastases.

The truth of the matter is that brain tumors can be cancerous (malignant) or non cancerous (benign). Around half of all brain tumors, or tumors in another part of the central nervous system, are malignant. The other half are benign tumors, or tumors where the diagnosis is not known.

Brain tumors that are cancerous (malignant) are more common in males than females. Non cancerous brain tumors, and tumors where the diagnosis is unknown, are more common in females.

According to studies; Almost half (46%) of brain tumors each year are diagnosed in people aged 65 and over. This includes tumors in other parts of the central nervous system and tumors anywhere else inside the bones of the head.

Patient or relative of the patient with brain tumor has the right to seek for further opinion. There may be people who prefer not to but we believe that the more you gain knowledge about these things the easier for you or your relative to decide.
