Sports Concussion is real

Concussion also known as Minor Head Injury - is commonly caused by falls, road crashes, assaults and sports accidents. It's temporary disturbance in the brain’s functioning as a result of a blow to the head. Some concussions cause you to lose consciousness, but most do not. It's possible to have a concussion and not realize it.

In many cases, concussions are not easy to pin point specially in the midst of a sports event. It can be an evolving condition with symptoms taking time to display. As a matter of fact, it requires honestly from the patient (what he/she is actually experiencing). Some of the common symptoms may include:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness

  • Confusion

  • Temporary loss of consciousness

  • Amnesia surrounding the traumatic event

  • Ringing in the ears

  • Nausea & Vomiting

  • Delayed response to questions

  • Fatigue

In many cases these symptoms resolve themselves within a few days or weeks. However, in some cases problems can persist for months, but still resolve themselves eventually. It is important to realize that these symptoms often happen even when there is no damage to the brain.

For athlete who just had a case of concussion; They should not return to play until he or she has been medically evaluated by a health care professional trained in evaluating and managing concussions. There are significant risks in returning to the field of play after sustaining a concussion. If a player sustains another blow to the head before the brain has had a chance to recover from the initial concussion, the damage can worsen to the point that it can be – on rare occasions – fatal.

It is advisable to bring patient to the nearest emergency department of any hospital when there is vomiting / loss of consciousness for more than 30 seconds, confusion or disorientation for immediate medical care. #concussion #headinjury #trauma #headtrauma #brain #head #specialist #neurologist #winnielimkhoo #doctor #physician #manila #care #diet #exercise #lifestyle #health #healthy
