A greater occipital nerve block, commonly known as a GON block or simply a nerve block, involves injecting a local anesthetic and steroid around the greater occipital nerve (GON) located at the back of the head and top of the neck. This procedure aims to reduce tissue inflammation and alleviate headaches.

For many individuals suffering from chronic or debilitating headaches, incorporating GON injections into a headache management plan can provide significant pain relief.

This injection can be advantageous for certain headache types, including chronic migraine, frequent migraine, medication overuse headache, and chronic daily headache. It is also recognized as one of the more effective treatments for those experiencing cluster headaches.

Approximately two-thirds of migraine sufferers experience benefits from GON block therapy. The effects can last up to three months, although some individuals may notice improvements diminishing after a few weeks. Headaches may decrease in frequency or severity or may cease entirely.
