Lasting between a few hours to as long as three days, they affect approximately 12% of the population, with women being three times more likely to experience them than men.


  • Cluster Headaches: These are extremely painful headaches that occur in cycles or "clusters." Characterized by intense pain on one side of the head, especially around the eye, they can last from 15 minutes to three hours. Cluster headaches are less common, affecting about 1 in 1,000 people.


  • Sinus Headaches: Triggered by sinus infections or inflammation, these headaches often come with facial pain, nasal congestion, and pressure in regions such as the forehead, cheeks, or around the eyes. They typically coincide with sinusitis, which affects around 31 million Americans each year.


Common Symptoms


Identifying headache symptoms can guide you towards the right treatment. Here are some key symptoms to look out for:


  • Pain Location: The pain can vary based on the headache type. For instance, tension headaches usually cause a dull pain across the forehead, while migraines tend to affect one side more painfully and cluster headaches localize pain around the eye area.


  • Pain Intensity: Headaches can range from mild to severe. Migraines are often described as excruciating, while tension headaches generally present as a more manageable ache.


  • Associated Symptoms: Migraines may also trigger nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. With tension headaches, you may notice muscle tightness in your neck and shoulders, indicating stress or tension.


  • Duration: The time a headache lasts can vary significantly. For example, tension headaches may linger for several hours or days, while migraines may strike for just a few hours or extend over multiple days.


When to Seek Medical Attention


Most headaches are not serious, but certain signs warrant immediate medical evaluation. Reach out to a healthcare professional if you experience:


  • A sudden, severe headache that feels different from your usual headaches.

  • Headaches coupled with confusion, trouble speaking, or visual disturbances.

  • Persistent headaches that worsen or do not improve with over-the-counter medications.
